Yes, it’s that time of year again! My husband is decorating Christmas cookies with our girls. He is the baker in the family. I don’t have the patience for it! Our girls love making cookies with Dad. In addition to Christmas cookies, he does delicious monster cookies, various pies, and the best chocolate cake ever! I don’t order chocolate cake at restaurants anymore because his is better.
I’m very glad my husband is building this tradition with our girls. Though every year, we hit some sort of snag. Lest you think that we operate in some sort of idyllic Norman Rockwell wonderland, let me tell you what happened this year. Around 3 pm we were alerted to an issue by the odor of poop wafting into the kitchen and overpowering the yummy cookie smells. I tried to pretend it was #3’s diaper, whom I was holding in the sling. But of course a three month old doesn’t make that much of a stink. When I went upstairs to investigate, I found the source of the problem. Our cherubic #2 was awake in her crib (she had been put down for her nap an hour prior) and she was undressed, with her diaper half off as well. Of course, a diaper completely full of poop. Both her hands were covered in poop, as were the crib sheet, crib slats, her Pooh blanket, all the stuffed animals in her crib, and her curly blonde hair.
I’m rather proud of my husband and myself. In 45 minutes flat, she was bathed and dressed in clean clothes, the crib was disinfected and sporting fresh sheets, and the bedding and stuffed animals were in the wash. Well, the first load, anyway. And the Christmas cookie making could resume! Cue There’s no place like home for the holidays. The Perry Como version, says my husband. Nope, you can’t beat Christmas cookie baking at home, sweet home.
It is so important to create lasting memories and family traditions with your children! What a blessing to have a husband who knows his way around the kitchen! Your girls are so sweet. And congrats on handling #2’s ‘poop surprise’ so well! I can’t say I would have been able to handle it as well as you and your husband. You two make an amazing team!
Thanks, Anita! That is kind of you! Yes, I am blessed. And, yes, having the family traditions is so key. As the kids get older, it should get easier to carry out the traditions—hopefully, right??
Great start on your blog, Mollie. I am so proud of you and thankful for the faithful way you and Mark (can I say his name?) are exemplifying the home built on Christ. Keep it up! Have a blessed Christmas.
