An hour into my new calling as a homeschooler Monday before last, I realized we lacked a few helpful tools…such as functional Internet.
We’re out in the country, and referring to our Internet as “high speed” has always been a stretch.
Two weeks ago, when nearly everyone’s home also became their workplace and/or school, I could no longer use my phone hotspot to get Internet connection on our computer. Which meant that I could not load any educational websites.
Alright, I thought to myself, I survived kindergarten without a computer. My six year old had plenty to do with good old pencil and paper.
Except that I had no pencils.
I spent Hour Number Two of my homeschool career searching for elusive #2’s. I even went through a forgotten stash of Halloween booty in the back of the pantry.
I came up with four pencils. Three had their erasers chewed off. No, not used up…chewed off. (All four had never even been sharpened.)
I remembered then why I didn’t keep pencils in the house.
I handed my daughter the fourth, a Christmas pencil sporting Santa and Rudolph which somehow had escaped the eraser eater. Finally, we were up and running!
It has been two weeks of challenge and adventure. I could continue with the lowlights, but I’d rather focus on the positives. These past two weeks, I believe we have covered all the essentials.
