Life as a SAHM, Surviving winter

What’s Your Superpower?

I always assumed that superheros were the domain of boys. As a mom of three girls, I figured I would be filling the dress-up bin with princess gowns instead of superhero costumes, and tripping over abandoned Barbies rather than action figures.

But now the girls have caught superhero fever. They especially love PJ Masks, a very popular cartoon that expertly markets to girls and boys both.

My oldest even got to see a live show with Daddy, thanks to my sister and brother-in-law, who bought her tickets for her 6th birthday. Dad also made PJ Masks-themed cupcakes for her classroom birthday treat. From scratch.

I did pick up the little character rings he used for decoration. That was my contribution.

Their favorite Christmas gift this year was a 15-piece set of PJ Masks action figures. Even my two year old adores them. Her favorite character is Luna Girl, the show’s villain, who constantly swipes superhero equipment in her quest to take over the world.

My two year old carries Luna Girl with her everywhere, even to bed. When she loses track of Luna Girl (which happens often because she loves to hurl poor Luna at top speed and yell, “She’s flying!”) she panicks and calls out the search party.

“I have Luna Girl power,” she informed me the other day.

Her four year old sister, clad in her unicorn outfit, added, “Mom, I have rainbow unicorn power.”

My four year old continued, “And Dad has collie dog power!” Recently she learned that collies are Dad’s favorite kind of dog. “And Mom, you have…” she paused a moment, thinking. “Computer power!” she exclaimed.

Computer power sounds like a real bonus…except I’m not exactly sure what that entails. Nor has my husband figured out how to use his “collie power.”

To tell the truth, it’s been a long, tough month, for a number of reasons. Too much sickness is one, especially for my kindergartener. She missed four days of school last week.

And the weather doesn’t help. Has there ever been a January so dreary? We’re all trapped inside with a flying Luna Girl.

I’m just trying to make it through. I don’t feel at all strong, and certainly not superpower strong.

God tells me just the opposite. I have super-human strength right here inside.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know … just how surpassingly great his power is for us who believe. –Ephesians 1:18-19

When God’s Word clears my vision, I see that working within me is His own limitless power. The power that created everything in the world, including me, now lives in me and fuels me to keep going, through sickness, through dreary days, through any difficulty, so that I can do the work He gives me. And more than just “keeping going,” He enables me to do that work with patience, wisdom, and a sense of peace.

Rather than computer power or collie power, I have God power.

Through faith in Christ, so do you. His surpassingly great power is alive in you. He makes you strong…strong with a purpose. He empowers you to accomplish the tasks He gives you, persevere through the tough days, and be at peace.

This month I started reading through the Psalms, a few verses at a time. I now have a new favorite: It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. —Psalm 18:32

That’s real power, from the real Superhero.

  1. Good thoughts as always, Mollie! Thanks for sharing them. Hope that everyone is well soon. Your month sounds extra trying, but God does give you the power to get thru it. It will soon be February…a short month!!
